Ranked: The 5 AI Coaches Cyclists Actually Use
Every tracker ships an AI coach now, and most of them cost nothing extra. There’s a reason for that, and it isn’t generosity. We ranked five on what they can see, what they’ve been caught making up, and whether they ask before they change your week.
Our criteria is as strict as it comes
We didn’t score sensors. We scored the layer above them: the part that turns readings into advice. Four questions. Can it see your sleep, your ride and your food from real devices? Has it been caught hallucinating on record? Can it change your plan? Does it ask you first? A free model that can’t see you and can’t afford to think fails the first two before it starts.
1. OVERALL BEST: Marco (HELIOS + THRIVE)

THRIVE’s stance is that cheap generic fitness trackers give you generic data with an AI overlay that hallucinates, and Marco is what they built instead. After four months, the difference is what he can see and what he’s allowed to do. THRIVE reads the HELIOS ring, a titanium ring you wear 24/7, so Marco knew how I’d slept without me typing a word. The ride computer and the food log live in the same app, so every ride and every meal was already in front of him. He’s trained on leading sports scientists, cycling studies and coaches, and he has full context: my recovery, my nutrition, my plan, my goal. What he does with it is the point. He built my plan into the calendar, not into a chat. He built the fuel plan next to it. Every morning he proposed the day, told me which input had moved, and waited for me to approve. When I said what I ate, he logged it. When I asked for a route, he built one I could ride in the app. THRIVE charges a subscription for him and says so plainly, because he does the work. He isn’t hallucinated; when he doesn’t have a reading he says so. Two caveats: power on the bike is estimated, and adaptation is once a day in the morning, never mid-ride.

2. ChatGPT as a coach

The free AI a new rider actually reaches for. It’s a real model, which puts it ahead of the bolt-ons below, and it can write a plausible plan. The problem is sight and drift. A rider preparing for his first race used it to build his plan: “he adjusted my schedule and added fitness 2/3 times a week.” Then: “I stopped using chatgpt cuz I noticed he gives weird recovery ways that hurt my legs.” Another on the same thread: “It also put me into a state of overtraining and I had some HR issues that derailed my season.” It has no link to your ring, your ride or your sleep, so every answer is about a rider it’s imagining, and it can’t tell when it’s wrong.
3. TrainerRoad AI FTP Detection

This is what an AI that acts without asking looks like. A rider on the TrainerRoad forum found his FTP had been raised from 233 to 293 overnight. “I suspected this was too high since I can only ride in the 290s for around 5 minutes … I cannot complete workouts with an FTP of 293.” Every session on his calendar had been rewritten to that number. His power meter was fine. The layer above it was confident and wrong, and it didn’t check.
4. WHOOP Coach

WHOOP’s AI coach reads the band and chats. A member posted a thread titled “Whoop hallucinating. For a health app this is NOT COOL,” and nearly two hundred people agreed. It describes yesterday. It doesn’t hold a plan, doesn’t hold your food, and doesn’t change anything. A summary of yesterday isn’t coaching.
5. Oura Advisor

The most-upvoted AI failure in this category. An owner asked the advisor about a trend and it told him his breathing had gone “from 15 breaths per minute to 15 breaths per minute.” When he pushed: “it admitted it made it up. When I asked for weekly trends, it proceeded to continuously make up more data.” Thread title: “Oura Advisor is dangerous.” The ring reads. The advisor invents. Nothing on the other side of the screen is a plan.
WHY WE CHOSE MARCO by THRIVE AI, AS THE ONLY AI COACH WORTH PAYING FOR
The model. Marco runs on a powerful, proprietary-configured paid model with the compute to be stable. The free AI on a tracker runs on whatever costs nothing, and it hallucinates. The training. Marco is trained on sports science, cycling studies and coaching practice. The free one is a general chatbot with a cycling prompt. The data. Marco’s answers are grounded in your own sleep, recovery, rides, training load, fuelling and goals, read by the system every day. The free one sees what you type.

The memory. Marco holds your goal, your plan and your history, and comes back to you with check-ins. The free one starts blank every chat. The hands. Marco builds a full plan, plans meals, builds routes, logs food and edits live cards in the chat. The free one writes paragraphs.

The manners. Marco proposes a change as a card you approve. The free one guesses, and the paid rivals move your plan without asking. The honesty. Marco tells you what the system read. The free one admits it made it up when you push.
Don’t waste another dollar on a generic health tracker. You are wasting your money. Buy the coach that can see you and has the power to be right.

I’m a year into cycling. Every metric came with a sentence about what it meant for me.
Told it what I ate. Logged. Fuel plan adjusted. No second app.
Proposed moving my hard day. Waited. I said yes. That’s the difference.
It built a route. It moved a session. It’s a coach with hands.
